MARIA FLOYD AT REPTON'S NEW COURT GALLERY
This Michaelmas term, Repton School’s New Court Gallery is delighted to present Notes on Canvas, an exhibition of new work by acclaimed British landscape painter Maria Floyd.
Running from 12 September to 13 October 2025, the exhibition captures the unique character of South Derbyshire’s landscape, inspired by Maria’s visit to Repton earlier this year. Maria will also lead workshops with Repton pupils, offering them the chance to learn directly from her creative process.
Maria, who studied Fine Art at Goldsmith’s College London and Illustration at Chelsea College of Art, is renowned for her expressive landscape paintings. Currently based in Devon, her work often reflects the dramatic scenery of the South West, from Cape Cornwall to the wild edges of Dartmoor. In this new collection, however, she turns her eye to the softer, greener beauty of the Trent Valley and Derbyshire countryside.
“This landscape has been a revelation to me,” Maria explains. “Spring in Derbyshire brought such vivid colours—the greens of the hills and hedgerows, the yellow of the rapeseed fields. It inspired me to create a truly unique new body of work in an inspiring new place.”
The exhibition features a striking mix of large-scale paintings, smaller works, and charcoal drawings, all created in response to Repton’s woods, hills and waters.
Ian Whitfield, Repton School’s Director of Art, comments: “I was impressed by the way Maria’s drawings and paintings retain the fresh wonder of observation. Her work is a perfect fit for our pastoral setting and an invaluable inspiration for our pupils.”
Headmaster Mark Semmence adds: “I have known Maria for more than ten years and greatly admire her work. To host her here at Repton is a privilege, and I know her career and artistry will inspire both our pupils and the wider community.”
