This Sunday saw a number of Mitre girls competing in the first trenche of this year's music finals having successfully won their places from the group stages. The first class – Junior Woodwind – contained no less than three Mitre girls and it was lovely to see new B Block girl Polly Sloman joining established O Block musician Charlotte Graham in this final. There were some wonderful performances from the three Mitre girls, and Polly won particular praise from the adjudicator for her rendition of “Vocalise” by Rachmaninoff. The next Mitre entrant was Eva Lo U6M in the Senior Brass section of the competition. In this class Eva played “Polka” by Vizzutti and did a superb job – coming away with the first Mitre music trophy of this academic year. In an otherwise all male class, later in the afternoon, Lili Kettlewell 4M more than held her own with a superb piece of drumming in the Junior Kit competition. Lili played a complicated Grade 3 piece in style and also added in some of her own improvisation, showing great musicality and skill. This use of technique and prowess was very marked and she did very well indeed, despite not winning on this occasion. The final Mitre entrant of the day was Emma Stoll L6M in the highly competitive and prestigious Senior Piano competition. This is a cup that Mitre still retained from 2009-10, and Emma played her piece “Sonata in B MajorL.446” by Scarlatti to a very discerning audience. Emma’s performance was so good that she retained the cup for the Mitre (no mean feat) and has certainly already made her mark as one of the leading lights in the music department.
Well done indeed to both Eva and Emma on their superb performances and to all Mitre girls who took part in this first round of music competitions – you did a wonderful job of representing yourselves and the House.
