The Latham House hockey sides took to the pitches with mixed success on the afternoon of Saturday 19th February. The Juniors battled valiantly in both of their matches and walked away with their heads held high even though they lost to stronger teams in Priory and Cross. Fergus Polglase, playing outfield for the first time in his life, posed a threat every time he took the ball forward and Jamie Clarke spared Latham's blushes on a number of occasions with some superb goal-keeping. The Seniors, however, started their campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 victory against Cross, with Christain Priestley scoring twice along with Josh Noakes. Pre-tournament favourites, Orchard, awaited us in our second game but things could not have got off to a better start when Josh Noakes once more slotted home after 4 minutes. Some very brave defending ensued, with one particularly memorable goal-line clearance from Daniel Hugill, and Latham still held their 1-0 lead with 3 minutes remaining. Unfortunately, Orchard managed to scramble through a late equaliser and so there was a nervous wait to see the whether Orchard's goal difference would be better than Latham's at the end of the group stage. Sadly, this proved to be the case and so the boys went home undefeated, but ultimately frustrated in their attempt to capture an elusive Senior House hockey trophy. Many thanks and congratulations to all those who played...maybe next year?
