UK Linguistics Olympiad

UK Linguistics Olympiad

On 2nd February some of our most talented linguists from B Block right through to the U6th will take part in the UKLO - The UK Linguistics Olympiad. It is the first time that pupils from Repton have been entered into the event and it should prove to be a real challenge which will stretch and enthuse our linguists.

Rather than deal with languages familiar to them pupils will be expected to answer questions on more obscure languages, chosen by the UKLO organisers. They will need to use logic, reasoning and linguistic flair to perform well. There are two entry levels and anyone who performs well at the advanced level test could be eligible to move on to round two in Edinburgh. From the 16 candidates in round 2, the best 4 will be chosen to represent the UK at the International Linguistics Olympiad later in the year!

Our lower school pupils have received some expert tuition from two of our U6th pupils, Rebecca Lawrence (A) and Harriet Hunt (F) who attended a Villiers Park course on Linguistics last year. Hopefully they have inspired a new generation of Reptonians to become interested in all things linguistic!

Good luck to all our competitors... Will anyone get to Edinburgh?
