Tribute to "The Few"

Tribute to "The Few"

In order to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the RAF section of the CCF and guests, including the Headmaster and Sergeant Jerry Tuplin, spent the afternoon of Wednesday 15th September paying tribute to the “Few”. Under the organisation of Corporal Jessica Stewart, the RAF section performed a parade in the Garth, during which a wreath was laid at the School War Memorial, in honour of the 2927 men who had shown such extreme bravery and courage in fighting this battle on behalf of their country, 70 years ago.

This was followed by a series of presentations in Pears School: the first, delivered by several NCOs, offered a brief overview of the Battle of Britain. This was followed by a presentation by John Plowright, who spoke of the historical context of the Battle and its significance within WWII. This was succeeded by a speech from Paul Stevens, recounting Repton School’s involvement throughout the course of the war, and, in particular, the roles of the six Reptonians who had fought in the Battle of Britain. The final address was given in recognition of the “Few”, detailing the many ways in which these men are remembered today. The event was concluded with the readings of the poems, Remember Me and High Flight, and a prayer by the Reverend Adam Watkinson.
