Thousands raised for Sale of Work charities.

After several weeks of hard work and organisation, The Abbey girls were excited to find this week, that at the latest count, their efforts have raised £3787.17 for Sale of Work. The figure has been achieved through a number of events that were set up by the girls and supported by staff and parents.

The Sixth Form Dinner held in October raised £1,106. This included the sale of photographs, taken by Mick Wolford, who very kindly donated his time and expertise. £2,904 also came from November’s cabaret dinner; in which parents were entertained with good food followed by year group and individual performances on the stage in our dining hall.

The Lower 6th traditionally take the lead in managing the Sale of Work projects and this year’s group deserve heaps of praise! Special mention must also go to Chris and Sue for putting on two magnificent dinners this term for students and parents; in addition to their responsibilities of running the House and Kitchen.

A big portion of the sum achieved so far, was through the generosity of parents attending The Cabaret Dinner; during which there was a silent auction. Over 20 prizes were donated by parents and local businesses. They included a flight over Derbyshire, a helicopter ride, a week at a cottage in Northern Ireland, a rugby shirt signed by Martin Johnson and various items such as special pen sets, champagne, perfumes and even chutney. Bids on the night achieved £1,904. We are really grateful to everyone’s generous contributions.

The total figure should be supplemented by the money raised at The Sale of Work Fair. This is due to be announced soon. Meanwhile, the girls at The Abbey and the Lower 6th in particular, can reflect on huge learning experience.

The drive and initiative shown by the Lower 6th was evident from the first meeting held 3 days into the Autumn Term. Since then, the girls have shown how they are able to motivate others, persuade organisations to contribute. They have also demonstrated flexibility and resourcefulness when plans have had to be changed. The whole group can feel proud of themselves.

More importantly, they can feel good about generating a financial contribution that will have a big benefit to charities and the local community.
