The Lent Charity - Passing It On

As pupils learnt in Chapel this morning, this year’s Lent Charity is Passing It On – a charity co-founded by Tom Naylor’s good friend James MacDonald, and staffed by a small group of enthusiastic, young volunteers. Formed in 2004, the charity has already raised over £250,000, which they have used to finance educational projects and build schools in some of the most deprived regions of Africa.

Repton School’s support this term will specifically benefit their Dreamland School, which has offered education to orphaned and disadvantaged children in and around the Akumadan community in Ghana since 2003.

Having begun in a church building, the School graduated to a temporary, wooden structure housing five classrooms in 2006. Eventually, in 2008 the Dreamland School was able to move into a purpose built infant school, thanks to Passing It On funding.

Unfortunately there are many children aged 12 to 15 still attending this infant school, because they can’t afford either the fees for local private schools or the transport costs to the nearest government school. The need for a Junior School is palpable.

This is where Repton comes in – it is hoped that the School’s Lent Charity campaign will go a long way towards raising the funds required to build a new Junior School teaching block.

Pupils are encouraged to suggest or organise their own fundraising events, in keeping with the fun and vibrant ethos of Passing It On, and of course anyone can make a donation to the Lent Charity. In either case, please contact Tom Naylor.
