Teenage Issues

We are delighted today to welcome Dr Aric Sigman who will be talking to A Block and the Lower Sixth as part of their PSHE course, today's subject being 'Alcohol Abuse'.

Renowned in the fields of Medicine, Biology and Psychology, Dr Sigman has received the Chartered Scientist Award from the Science Council and has worked on teenage health education campaigns with the Department of Health, he has even spoken at the Houses of Parliament.

From working in the pop music industry he has seen first-hand how the pressures and expectations of celebrity culture lead to problems including eating disorders and alcohol abuse and how the images that children and young people see of smiling successful pop singers and celebrities do not show the full reality.

He has a long history of health education work with young people, as the psychologist on the BBC’s Going Live and then Live & Kicking for most of the 1990s as well as writing health and psychology advice columns for several BBC children’s and teenage magazines.  Through this work he has developed a unique ability to communicate with young people on what can be challenging isssues.

Winner of The Times Educational Supplement's Information Book Award with health and psychology book Getting Physical and with his new book The Spoilt Generation: why restoring authority will make children and society happier, which includes alcohol related issues receiving a considerable degree of national news coverage recently, we look forward to hearing from this inspirational speaker.

Using his considerable experience and focusing on impartial new scientific information, Dr Sigman aims to provide the facts to help children and young people think and decide for themselves.
