On Tuesday, 25th January twelve pupils took the English Speaking Board’s Advanced Certificate in Spoken English exam. The syllabus has been offered at Repton for the past seven years and requires candidates to give a presentation based on independent research, lead a discussion on a newspaper article, give a prepared reading and contribute as part of the listening group by questioning other candidates and participating in their discussions. The syllabus is aimed primarily at U6 pupils but this year’s cohort comprised mainly L6 pupils and one A blocker (James Novotny 4P), who decided to rise to the challenge of taking this exam three years early! Presentation topics included Animal Husbandry, the American Civil Rights Movement, the Size Zero phenomenon and Conceptual Art.
All candidates achieved either a Merit, Merit+ or Distinction and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere created by the visiting examiner.
