Sunday saw the finals of the singing, orchestral percussion and strings competitions. There were classes in classical and popular singing, guitar, percussion, strings and harp all of which were attended by an enthusiastic and supportive audience. We were fortunate to have Mr Paul Spicer as our adjudicator. Mr Spicer, a Professor at the Royal College of Music and the Birmingham Conservatoire, formerly Director of the Lichfield Festival and a senior BBC producer said that he was 'so very impressed by much of what he heard', which is praise indeed from such an experienced and distinguished musician.
The afternoon and evening were thrilling, with each class strongly contested as student after student delivered highly accomplished and communicative performances, drawing us into their musical world. There were many confident and compelling individual performances, indeed Mr Spicer asserted that there was not a weak performance among them. Congratulations must go not only to the winners and those highly commended, but to all who put in such a great deal of practise time and hard work to achieve the standard we heard.
