Sixth Year Running

The girls’ U18 squad has won the national schools hockey title for a record-breaking sixth time in a row.

The road to the title started in October last year (2009) when they won through to the Midlands final by becoming Derbyshire county champions. They were then crowned Midlands champions for the eighth consecutive year.

The finals were a different format to previous years with the ten top school teams in the country coming together to play matches over two days.

This secured their place against Worksop in the final by winning all their games in their pool.

Ipswich 3 – 0

Pocklington 5 – 1

Kingston 1 – 0

Cheltenham 3 – 2

Spurred on by a large crowd of supporters including pupils, parents, former parents, staff, a Governor and Roger and Rosemary Thompson, the girls beat Worksop 3 – 1 to retain their title.

Just four weeks ago the girls won the Girls Schools National Indoors trophy, and so yesterday’s victory has made it a top title double for the squad.

Headmaster, Robert Holroyd, said: “We are extremely proud of the squad, their coaches and support staff. Winning the country’s top schools title for a sixth time is marvellous, and no less exciting than on any previous occasion. Our continued success shows that our coaching, staff, training schedules and preparation are the very best.

“The squad deserves particular recognition for its achievements both indoors and outdoors, very well done to them.”

A full report of the championships and more photographs will follow shortly.
