Repton School

Six of the best from Latham's musicians

Six of the best from Latham's musicians

Sunday 21st February saw Latham complete a clean sweep of the boys' trophies in the second half of this year's music competitions. The House produced six winners in the vocal, strings and orchestral percussion classes, which is surely a school record for a single day of competition. Joseph Jankinson (B Block) started the ball rolling in the Junior Voice with a wonderfully assured and mature interpretation of Vaughan Williams' 'Linden Lea', before Sebastiaan Howle (A Block) took home the Junior Popular Song with an authentic and highly engaging performance of 'The Surry with the Fringe on Top' from Oklahoma!. Edwin Wilton-Morgan (O Block) should also be mentioned for his efforts in these classes, but he just couldn't pip Joseph or Sebastiaan. Owen Winter (U6), the elder statesman of Repton singing, did not disappoint as he soared to victory in both the Senior Classical and Senior Popular class. His delightful rendition of 'I'll Know' from Guys & Dolls proved a great success, but his singing in Handel's 'Total Eclipse' from Samson reached new heights and left everyone in the audience deeply moved. Tom Hume (L6) should also be congratulated for his singing - the future certainly looks bright! There was just time before the tea interval for Robert Keep (U6) to secure the Orchestral Percussion trophy playing Keith Bartlett's 'Boogalie-Woogalie', before Mark Harrison (L6) produced an intimate and confident rendition of Prelude No.4 by Villa-Lobos to secure the Guitar cup. There were other successful performances by Guy Davis (A Block) on guitar, Damon Zhong (A Block) on violin, and Owen Winter on violin, but six trophies were probably sufficient for one day! Many congratulations to everyone involved for confirming Latham's place, once again, as the leading boys' House for music.
