Senior Hockey Team Foiled by Field Heroics

Goalkeeping heroics and dogged defence kept Abbey at bay in the House hockey final yesterday. The Senior Hockey team suffered a shock defeat in a penalty flicks contest after an exciting match ended in a draw at full time. Controversially, rather than going to extra time, the referees decided to opt for a penalty flick contest. Despite the valiant efforts of Lucy Chatterton in goal, saving two shots; Field ended as winners.

Field’s goal was peppered with shots throughout the match, but last ditch defending and superb saves by 1st Team goalkeeper, Annabelle Church kept Abbey at bay. One goal by Abbey was disallowed, leaving the scores at 0-0 at half time.

Our hockey stars showed great skill throughout the match, with typically strong performances from Shona McCallin, Wiz Mumby, Bex Brown and Becky Siebert. Field were dangerous throughout however and they grew in confidence as the match went into the final third.

Eventually Field scored with a beautifully struck shot, and The Abbey surged into even greater efforts, with Shona making several mazy runs into the D and Friedi Juncker coming close. Shona eventually scored to bring the scores level at 1-1. In the last minutes our attacker, Friedi came close to settling the match but was foiled again by the goalkeeper, who threw herself into the firing line and needed assistance to recover.

The penalty flicks ended a thrilling contest, with Field clearly raising their game against an Abbey team boasting 5 1st team and 4 2nd team players. It was a superb House contest played with great skill.

The girls no doubt will be even more determined to regain the title next year. In the meantime, they will look forward to the match against Abbey O.Rs, to be played on the first Sunday of the Summer Term (25th April).
