This afternoon saw the Mitre win in the Girls’ Physical section of the Russell cup competition.

This is an annual event run on a House basis and involves two teams – physical and skills competing to win points in a series of activities across the course of the afternoon which all require team work, co-operation and effort.

The skills team was led by Sophie Griffiths and Laura Clague L6M. Their team really enjoyed the afternoon and it was lovely to see them co-operating and discussing how to approach each task across the series of activities and challenges, including an indoor circuit, pool command task and construction activity. Not all of the activities went to plan! The team were not allowed to use their construction to finish the task due to the instability of their structure and in the pool when required to get all 6 team members out of the water with kayaks and other poolside equipment the girls were in the water still struggling to get into the kayaks when the whistle went! The spirit and energy of the team was spot on and it was lovely to see O Blockers – Bethan Lewis, Lizzy Duggleby, Scarlett Flight and Emily Welsh taking part. Well done to this group of girls who all displayed the kind of enthusiasm and energy that is the mark of a Mitre girl.

The physical team had a superb afternoon, and having been to some of the training kindly provided by Mr Lawrence and his team, were aware of many of the skills needed to be able to complete this task. It was wonderful to see their raft making skills before the girls bravely put their raft into the River Trent and rowed it down to the finish. The second challenge of the afternoon was the outdoor obstacle course. This presented its own natural hazards – mainly in the form of stingy nettles! The girls put in some fantastic team work in this section of the event and it was extraordinary to see the way in which they deftly rolled barrels, and climbed over walls in awe inspiring time! This team compromising of sixth formers: Amelia Etherington, Sophie Davies, Harriet Cornish, Emily Renshaw, Emily Boyce and Lottie Jameson gained a well deserved win for the House.

Overall a great afternoon – in terms of competition and enjoyment. Many thanks to the many staff involved in organising the activities and to the loyal group of Mitre supporters who came down to cheer on the teams.
