Repton's Windows on the World

Repton’s ICT team has announced the launch of the new Repton Portal, giving staff and pupils full access to Repton’s ICT Network from around the world.

Until recently, portal access was restricted to basic email and file-sharing; with this new software the full gamut of ICT services will be accessible using just a simple internet connection. The software even features a Remote Desktop, opening a window to a pupil’s school computer and enabling them to use it as though they were sitting at a desk in their boarding house!

It will also give access to the School’s Click View, a vast online video library, featuring educational and topical broadcasts selected by Archivist and Librarian Paul Stevens.

Lastly, the new software has also been used to recycle old school computers, extending the lives of machines which might be expected to have performance issues, but are perfectly capable of connecting to the internet. By connecting these machines to the portal, a so-called Thin Client infrastructure is created, whereby processing is done by the Portal server rather than the computer itself, giving the machines a new lease of life.

This new technology, while helping the School’s green credentials, has also enabled boarding houses such as the Abbey to improve their ICT resources significantly. Meanwhile, the new Repton Portal will enable pupils to continue their studies, wherever they choose to spend their Easter holidays!
