Prestigious Artisit Exhibits at Repton

From Monday 20th April to Friday 29th May 2009 works by Michael Porter will be shown simultaneously in School’s three art galleries, New Court Gallery, Gallery No 1 and the Susan Oppenheim Gallery within the Art Department.

Michael, who was born and raised in Derbyshire, has work in most major collections in the UK and is acknowledged as being at the forefront of British contemporary landscape painting. He uses traditional materials but his methods and techniques are employed in unorthodox and inventive ways, never simply for effect.

When looking at these paintings we see an interpretation of a specific place. We scan the surface and pick out recognisable features, our eyes glide over indistinct ground cover and come to rest on intricately painted minutiae, replicating the experience of being in the landscape. Michael’s paintings don’t conform to our expectations of what a landscape should look like. As he says ‘It is the artist’s job to communicate and what I do is to tell people what they already know, but I explain it in a different way.

The exhibition will launch in Repton at 6.30pm on Thursday 23rd April with a private view in New Court Gallery, where the artist will be in conversation with Jeremy Bournon, Director of Art. An Open Invitation is extended for the private viewing and is sure to provide an enjoyable evening for all art lovers.
