Political Debate

The Politics Society met last night (17 September) to discuss the controversial title : What does the release of the Lockerbie bomber suggest about our Government and its treatment of Terrorists? The topic drew considerable interest, and thirty pupils from O Block, L6th and U6th joined in a heated debate on whether there was indeed any justification for the release of the Lockerbie bomber on compassionate grounds. The discussion also looked at the merits of devolution to Scotland and the significance of the relationship between Scotland and the Westminster Parliament. There was considerable debate about morality, and whether imminent death was enough of a reason to release a convicted terrorist.

The Society, at its first meeting of the year, also appointed Calum Setterington (U6 S) to be the Secretary of the Society for the coming year. There is no doubt that Calum, who led much of the evening's discussion, will bring some very interesting topics forward for discussion and we look forward to seeing him develop the impact of the Society.

With Politics, since September 2009, an A level choice at Repton, the Society is set to flourish in the coming weeks. The next topic for debate is- Does the MP expense scandal, undermine the integrity of our elected representatives? Given the evening's heated exchanges there could be some considerable debate in week 5!
