ORFC 4-5 Old Etonians, Saturday 16th Jan 2010, Arthur Dunn Cup Round 2
Having been twice postponed due to snow, the OR’s second round was played last Saturday, after some sterling work by the grounds staff.
Unfortunately, this rearranged date ruled several important old hands out of the tie. Nevertheless, the young players called on in their place made a sterling effort and almost managed to progress.
After a cagey first half ended 1-2, Alex Evans (N’04) having finished a superb move started by Tom Jenkins (L’01) the slick pitch and adventurous approaches by both teams led to a grandstand 4-5 finish, with a towering header by Tim Lambert (P’01), Chris Carlile’s (L’01) penalty win, converted by Simon Duggan (0’00) and a header by Carlile himself completing the OR’s goals.
Ultimately the ORs were undone by some defensive naivety, but such adventure, workrate, quality and overall youthfulness, can only bode well for a sustained assault on this prestigious cup in the next few years.
