  • Gaudy 2010

OLD REPTONIAN SOCIETY GAUDY , June 12th 2010
A fine summer’s day, after a worrying week of wet weather, helped almost 200 visitors to enjoy themselves immensely at another Gaudy. This year it was any former pupil who was at Repton pre 1950 or between 1962 and 1972. This, of course, included the first 2 girls ever to attend the school, Carole Blackshaw and Sally Foulds. People came from distant points of the globe ( New Zealand, Kenya, Finland, USA) and were not disappointed. A notable visitor was Nelson Muturi who had not been to Repton for some years and came all the way from Nairobi for the occasion.
Former staff attending included Bill Blackshaw, Jill Pellow, John Billington, Mike Charlesworth, John Fishley and Dick Morgan. Former governors who joined us were Sir Sydney Giffard, Edward Wilkinson, Bill Hutchinson, John Hetherington and Alan Bemrose.
Pre-lunch drinks were held in The Garth where we were royally entertained for 30 minutes by the Repton School Jazz Band. A sumptuous lunch awaited in Pears School and an entertaining speech from the Headmaster, Robert Holroyd, who spoke of the school’s recent sporting successes in hockey ( National Champions, boys and girls ), football ( Independent Schools Cup Finalists at 2 age levels ) and his plans for the future. He emphasised the importance of support from the Old Reptonian community.
This was then followed by tours of the school led by current pupils who had given up their afternoon to volunteer their help. All this finished at the former House with a chance to look at the old photograph albums and reminisce further. Judging by the many complimentary comments which we have had, a very pleasant day was had by all.

  • Abbey Old Girls Hockey Match

Great fun at Abbey Old Girls’ Hockey match

It was so good to see the Abbey Old girls yesterday (Sunday April 25th), for the inaugural Abbey O.R.s versus House Hockey match.  Some O.R.s had made a big effort to travel significant distances to get here; and they were rewarded by an entertaining hockey match against the current Abbey House girls on Sunday.

The match was played in a relaxed atmosphere, on a beautifully sunny afternoon, with plenty of laughter from the pitch as well as the supporters gathered on the sidelines. The girls were very grateful to Mr. Jones and Mr. Giles for giving up their Sunday afternoon to referee the match in such a way that everyone could feel comfortable, if at times a little breathless – it had been a while since some people had last played hockey after all!

Despite their complaints about fatigue, the Old Girls showed their skills hadn’t left them. Emily Dyson, who has been playing club and university hockey, Abi Halidu, Sarah Huish and Georgie Chamberlain were particularly strong performers.

In an evenly contested first half, The O.R.s took a 2-0 lead, through goals from Sarah Huish and Emily Dyson, before Abbey House striker, Freidi Juncker scored a goal to make the half-time score 2-1.

After oranges and an impromptu soaking from the pitch’s water-canons at half time (much hilarity at the scattering of damp players and spectators), the match resumed in a similar manner to the first, but with current Head of House, Abby Smale and Deputy Head of House, Sophie Young taking a ‘back-seat-driver’ role! Despite this, The House team played strongly with 1st teamers Becky Seibert, Freidi Juncker and Bex Brown well supported by younger girls, including Kate Benn and Nodira Ashurova of A Block, who performed very well.

The O.R.s pulled further ahead, with another goal from Sarah Huish, before Freidi Juncker scored, followed by two goals from the commanding Becky Siebert, making the score 4-3 to Abbey House at the end.

Teams and supporters then retired to The Abbey for tea and lots of chatter, which included O.Rs plotting even more world travel. All agreed that the hockey match should be established as an annual event. Indeed with this year’s Upper 6th, adding to the potential organisers for the Old Girls’ team, ‘momentum’ for next year already seems to have been established.

Mrs Wilbraham voiced the thanks of The Abbey girls to the O.R.s for making the effort to return for the match –and for making the day such fun. Particular thanks went to Sarah Huish who ‘rounded up’ the O.R. team so well.

     Teams:

Old Girls: Abi Halidu, Emily Dyson, Sarah Huish, Verity (Vez) Joshi, Liz Kay, Aiofe Broderick, Emma Carr and Georgie Chamberlain (All 2009).

Abbey Girls: Abby Smale, Sophie Young, Friedi Juncker, Bex Brown (U6), Becky Siebert, Simone Matthews (L.6), Lucy Setterington, Harriet Celerier (O Block), Nodira Ashurova and Kate Benn (A Block).

  • OR Hockey

On March 14th 2010 an assorted bunch of OR’s assembled on the water based astro for the annual fixture with the school. Two strong OR sides had good wins against the school side, 5-2 and 6-1, and also played each other in a close game which saw 9 goals.

There was the usual mix of experience from Joey Ascott, Nick Jerman and Julian Turner, and the youthful vigour of Rory Farquharson and Josh Webster. There was plenty of skill on show: with the likes of Tim Gilbert, Chris Beastall, James Bishton it couldn’t have been otherwise. Goals were plentiful: Luke Carlile was as usual in the right place at the right time, and Joe Fell, Will Charlesworth and Fraser Wilkinson were among the scorers. All in all it was a good afternoon of friendly hockey. Mike Keep
