New Year Politics Quiz

The Politics Society started the term with a New Year Quiz – based on events around the world from the past 12 months. The winning team showed some superb knowledge of current affairs and were able to answer some of the most difficult of questions. These included a question on what was stolen from Auschwitz concentration camp in December 2009 and the name of the Commons speaker forced to resign over the MP expense scandal last year.

The Society continues to thrive and this term the programme has diversified to include some visiting speakers and also some collaboration with other school societies.

On Friday 15th January 2010 the Society will be welcoming MP Mark Todd to the School, for a meal with some members of the Society followed by a talk to all interested members of the School.

The following week, on 20th January the Politics Society and Debating Society will be hosting a joint debate on the 2010 Election and the question of whether any of the parties are fit to govern the UK. The proposed motion is: "This House believes that neither of the main political parties (in England) serve our interests". This is a public debate and open to all members of the school community.

We are fortunate to be welcoming the Political Editor of the Sunday Times later in the term – Jonathan Oliver, who will address the society on the British Political landscape. Given the proximity of the General Election this should be a superb opportunity for pupils to find out more about the prospects of the General Election and the future of British Politics.

We hope many pupils will attend these events, and look forward to more debate and discussion across the course of the term.
