On Thursday 7th October the annual Brass and Wind concert took place in the Beldam Hall, involving an hour of colourful music-making across a wide range of instruments, ages and ensembles. The Symphonic Brass got the evening off to a rousing start with an upbeat arrangement of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Lower Sixth Former Jake Leese followed with a work called Witch Hunt for saxophone and piano, a very polished performance of a technically tricky piece. The Clarinet Choir, Trumpet Quartet and Sax Pack then began ringing the stylistic changes.
The Sax Pack’s rendition of Yakety Sax recalled for some in the audience the heyday of the “Benny Hill Show”, to which it was the signature tune, and the clarinet choir played an interesting arrangement of Pop Goes the Weasel, with a cheeky interjection at the end from Assistant Director of Music Mr Mark Cadman. Symphonic Brass rounded the evening off with James Bond and Summer Nights from Grease. Mr Cadman extends his thanks to all the musicians who took part in what was a very enjoyable and high quality concert.
