On the afternoon of Sunday 8th November, a number of Mitre girls performed superbly in the first round of the House Music Competition finals held in the Beldam Hall. There was real strength and breath in the Mitre musicians, with eleven performances in total across the afternoon from Mitre girls. The first performances of the afternoon were in the Junior Woodwind competition and Charlotte Graham got the afternoon off to a fine start by performing a haunting rendition of the Purple Bamboo melody on the flute. In the same class Ellie Jennings Edwards (fresh from County hockey) also played her piece Romanze with real poise and flair. There were also excellent performances in the Senior Woodwind and Brass sections from Emma Monteiro, Kit Rees and Eva Lo. Emma was noted by the adjudicator for her musicality and the control in Eva’s performance of Trumpet Concerto, 2nd Movement by Haydn stilled the auditorium. Kit also gave a very comically timed and assured performance of Saxophone Comique. Lili Kettlewell took to the drum-kit and wowed with her interpretation of Corners. This section was then followed by an outstanding performance in the senior Kit competition by Laura Smith, who threw her jacket to the floor, before taking to the kit to play Swing it. Her finale was greeted with warm applause and she beat off very strong competition to take the prize in this section. The Mitre then ended the afternoon, dominating the Senior Piano competition. Four of the Eight finalists were Mitre girls, and every one of them gave a polished and moving performance. The adjudicator was unable to separate the performances of two Mitre girls, which meant that Harriet Yueng (playing Consolation No 3 in Db major composed by Liszt) and Kiki Betts-Deans (playing Impromptu op. 90, no. 2 in Eb major composed by Schubert and played entirely from memory) deservedly shared first prize. What a wonderful afternoon and show casing of fabulous Mitre talent – well done to all for their superb efforts!
