Mitre retains Junior House hockey cup!

Mitre retains Junior House hockey cup!

The Mitre played some superb hockey today to win both the semi-final and final in the Junior House matches.

Georgina Whitehouse demonstrated superb leadership as captain of the team – creating a number of chances on goal and striking the ball convincingly in the circle. She scored some excellent goals in the first match against Field and helped to take a convincing 6-0 victory in this game. There was also some superb work from Lili Kitts, Lili Kettlewell and Jess Variava who all worked hard in attack and created great opportunities in the circle, all having successful shots on goal. New B Blockers – Zoe Buckland, Emily Gerard Pearse and Nat Mansfield also all played really well defending the ball and keeping the attack flowing through the centre of the pitch. There was also some strong defending from Ellie Jennings Edwards that stopped the Field having too many chances on goal – although particular mention should go to the opposition goal keeper who did a superb job on the afternoon and saved a number of shots on goal.

In the second game, the Mitre faced a strong Garden opposition, who had also won their semi-final 6-0. In this game the Mitre had to work hard to keep creating chances and were helped by a 1-0 lead from the opening minutes of the match. The Garden worked hard to take this lead away and had a number of chances in the circle. Mitre goal keeper – Clare Gething Lewis did superbly to save a penalty flick in the circle against the Mitre and this was one of many saves she made that kept Mitre just ahead. It was great to see Amy Davies, Daisy Collins and Phoebe Roberts working so hard to keep the ball away from Garden players and it was this gritty determination that saw a tightly fought game end in a 3-1 win to Mitre, with a final goal in the minute before the whistle blew.

A wonderful afternoon of hockey, in which all the girls played a critical part and worked very hard in extremely cold and wet conditions to retain the Junior trophy. Well done girls!
