Mitre retain the cup in the Kropacsy relays!

This afternoon saw the running of one of the most anticipated House events of the school year – the Kropacsy relays, held in memory of OR James Kropacsy.

The first section of the relays had already been run on May 9th, with Mitre taking the win on this occasion in both the Senior and Junior 4 minute relays. This particular relay is a race of endurance that requires runners to keep relaying for 4 minutes until the whistle is blown. Unfortunately on this occasion a deluge of rain made the track very slippery and the remaining races had to be postponed until this afternoon, for round 2 of the event!

The Mitre started this afternoon well, winning both the Junior and Senior section of the 60m shuttle. This was an impressive achievement and gave more confidence to the team as they went in to the Medley sprint event. In this race the first runner starts with a 100m sprint, hands over to a 200m athlete and then the baton is finally passed to a 300m runner. The effort the girls put into this race was tremendous and we finished both the Junior and Senior events in 2nd place.

This left us with all to play for in the final event – the 5 lap relay – which involves running in year group orders, laps in 100m bursts. All year groups were represented in this final event, which saw a convincing win for Mitre girls and lots of cheering from the sidelines.

Special thanks should go to the members of the U6th who ran today despite officially being on study leave, namely – Hannah Barker (Captain and Head of House), Harriet Cornish (Deputy Head of House), Amelia Etherington (Prefect) and Sophie Davies (Deputy Head of House). Also impressive was the number of supporters who came down from the House to watch the event and cheer on the runners in the middle of a busy time for public examinations.

It was perhaps the burst of the music for the film “Chariots of Fire” in the speech the girls had before the races this afternoon, that helped to lead the House to victory? More likely is that yet again Mitre has proved the value of pulling together as a House, showing team spirit and a determination to win that would rival that of any professional athlete. Well done girls – a well deserved win and another trip to Dominoes for Mrs P to buy you some well-deserved pizzas!!

Final scores:

Mitre – 31 points
Garden – 24 points
Abbey – 12 points
Field – 10 points
