Our first speaker of what is going to be a great year was Katherine Guest, an OR who is currently a second year Medical student at Nottingham University.
She arrived on Thursday 1st October to be taken out for a meal by Doctor Ingleston and the two Medsoc secretaries Katy and Ben, who immediately began an inquisition on life at med school, and life beyond the Arch. As if this wasn’t tiring enough, Katherine then went on to face a crowd of about 18 eager sixth form prospective medics, with an excellently delivered talk on the entrance process, focussing on the interview and the experience of the first year.
She had based her talk around answers to all the questions she had had when she was in our position, which was great as it really allowed us to interact with her on an equal station as she had only recently been through all the things we are now experiencing. Her insight into the interview was particularly revealing, as she explained how even the best of us get nervous, and reassured us that the interviewers were not there to catch us out. It was also greatly reassuring to hear of her performance in the two medical entrance exams, and there were a few calmer faces afterwards!
Katherine has been a great speaker for the Medical Society, and we shall certainly be passing her details to the next secretaries, as her insight and advice were invaluable to us. It was certainly the best start to the year we could have hoped for.
