Malaca Instituto

Repton School’s Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Mrs Sarah Checketts, spent a week in Spain studying at the Malaca Instituto in Málaga during the Easter break after being awarded an intensive study course by Cactus Language whilst in attendance at the Independent Schools Modern Languages Association (ISMLA) conference earlier this year.

The course involved 4 hours intensive language teaching each morning (in a group which had to be created especially to cater for highly competent Spanish speakers) as well as the opportunity to participate in cultural and educational discussions on matters such as the Basque separatist group ETA, the use of drama in language teaching and Spanish politics and economics. In addition to this there were film showings and cookery lessons in which some local gastronomic delights were created!

Speaking on her return to the UK, Mrs Checketts stated ‘It was a fantastic experience that has allowed me to develop my language skills further as well as to keep my finger on the pulse of what is happening in Spain currently during this period of economic crisis and political uncertainty. Malaca Instituto is an excellent place to study Spanish in a friendly and well organised environment and I can thoroughly recommend it.
