The Linguists gathered together on a freezing December evening to enjoy a soirée of European style festivities in the delightful surroundings of the Mitre private side, complete with twinkling lights and a roaring fire. Activities included tasting typical treats such as Stollen and Lebkuchen and singing a variety of traditional Christmas songs including ‘Mon beau sapin’, ‘Il est né le divin enfant’, ‘Vive le vent’, ‘Hoy es Navidad’ and ‘Ein kleiner weißer Schneemann’ all expertly accompanied on piano by Alex Hodgkinson. Oliver Parker also played the guitar to accompany ‘El burrito sabanero’ which added a real Latin flavour to the evening.
Jack Sanders, Brooke Hadeed, Annabelle Buckland, Meg Ewins and Haidee Hunt informed us of the different European customs which make their experiences so different and Jack O’Callaghan confidently recited a festive German poem: ‘Die Heiligen drei Könige’ by Heine. Nigel Kew entertained us with a history of the most-translated Christmas carol ‘Stille Nacht’ which was then beautifully sung in three languages with outstanding performances by Brooke Hadeed, Joey Holroyd and Charlie Graham.
