On the afternoon of Sunday 8th November, a number of Lathamites performed superbly in the first round of the House Music Competition finals held in the Beldam Hall. Joseph Jankinson got the afternoon under way in fine style by producing a beautiful performance of Marcello's Oboe Concerto in D minor. Even more impressive was the fact that he played all three movements from memory and he deservedly won the Junior Woodwind Cup. This was soon followed by the Brass sections in which no fewer than four trumpeters from Latham performed. Edwin Wilton-Morgan, Jeremy Williams and Laurence Webster all played with clarity and assurance, but it was Tom Hume who walked away with the Senior Brass Cup for his mature and insightful playing in Vizzuti's unaccompanied Ballad. Further accomplished performances followed from Huw Rees-Jones on drum-kit and Tom Hume on electric guitar before Joseph returned to the stage to receive a 'highly commended' for his playing of Haydn in the Junior Piano class. The day's entertainment was rounded off with a highly competitive Senior Piano contest in which Owen Winter produced a wonderfully accomplished interpretation of the third movement of Beethoven's Sonata in C minor. It was not quite enough to win the class but it did round off what was an incredibly successful day for Latham's musicians. Well done to them all!
