The Cross won the SHM cricket trophy for the second time in three years with a heart-stopping blow of Luke Lacey’s bat from the penultimate ball of the match. School House posted a competitive total (150 for 7) in the first innings of the game. However, imaginative captaincy from Lacey, backed up by tight bowling from Ameer Ahmed (2 for 14) and exemplary fielding (epitomised by Sandy Morgan-Wynne’s spectacular catch on the boundary) ensured that this was a total The Cross could overhaul if key players batted well. With the early wickets of Seb Whale and Ameer Ahmed falling, vital contributions were made by Harun Rauf (17) and Tom Hunter (12 not out) who gave Luke Lacey as much of the strike as possible. Luke’s unbeaten 96 was a captain’s innings and a fitting way in which to mark the end of his time at Repton. At Lists, the Headmaster, who presented the trophy to Luke, speculated that this victory would go down in the records as “Lacey’s Final”.
