The James Kropascy Relays are held every Summer Term in memory of a Lathamite who died tragically and prematurely in 1998. James was a keen athlete and an all-round 'House' man, so it was decided to honour his memory with an athletics festival consisting of a variety of relay races involving as many members of the House as possible. Having won the Trophy no fewer than seven times since the competition began in 1999, hopes were high for this year's Latham House team. Things could not have got off to a better start with the Juniors and the Seniors winning the first event, the four-minute relay. The Juniors then stormed back from behind in the 60m sprints to win again. Three events, three first places for Latham! The teams then found themselves stuck in the rut of third position in the next three events: the Senior 60m sprints, and the 300m-200m-100m relays. Going into the final event, in which four boys from each year group in the House sprint 100m, the Latham team were confident of being there or thereabouts for top spot. All fears were allayed when the combined team stormed home, fittingly with Captain Matthew Dewis 50 metres in front, to guarantee the Trophy's return to its spiritual home in Tanners Lane. It was an amazing effort from all the boys involved and one of which James would surely have been proud.
