Kamie Lakhani wins Arkwright Scholarship

It was an exciting Half Term for Kamie Lakhani (L.6), who was one of only 67 female designers from the U.K. to receive the Arkwright Scholarship for Design, Technology and Engineering, for 2010. The award ceremony was held at The Institute of Engineering and Technology, in Central London.

Sponsored by the R.A.F., Kamie applied for the Scholarship in January 2010, and had to sit an aptitude paper. During the second stage, in April, Kamie had to attend an interview in Loughborough, where she presented her GCSE project and had to explain it to a panel of judges. There were also team activities, such as designing and building a bridge, using drinking straws.

263 successful applicants were invited to the prestigious award ceremony in London,.

Kamie said that she was very nervous as she waited to go up to receive her prize (A £500 award over 2 years plus career awareness days, as well £400 to the school). Kamie’s achievements such as A* GCSEs and Duke of Edinburgh awards, were read out as she went up onto the stage.

This grand day out was a fitting reward to Kamie, who is not just a talented designer, but a hard working student and great team player in the all aspects of The Abbey’s life.
