This afternoon saw a superb inter-House competition, in the form of the Caroline Tyler relays. The relays are held in memory of Caroline Tyler (G) and are the first chance in the year for the whole House to support an inter-House competition. In true Mitre form the House was seated en masse well ahead of the event with homemade banners at the ready and a big team of supporters ready to shout for the House.
The first of the races was a great opportunity for the new B Block girls to get involved with the spirit of the House. They swam superbly and came a narrow second to a very strong Garden team. It was impressive to see these girls swim with some much energy and lovely to have the rest of the House cheering them on. This relay was followed by the A Block relay – Mitre won this race – despite the panic alarm being set off in the middle of it! This was declared void due to the confusion of the race and had to be re-run. Luckily the Mitre girls swam even harder on the re-run of the race and came an even more convincing first place for the second time.
The Sixth Form also had a great race, coming second and being led by some excellent effort from members of the U6th in the form of - Hannah Barker, Tamsin Bowers and Amelia Etherington. They were also joined by Emma Stoll L6M who did a superb job swimming with the team. At the end of the year group races the whole result of the afternoon hung on the outcome of the finishing medley relay.
In this relay the Mitre, in true style, put in a superb performance. It was great to see the U6th on the edge of the pool urging others on and this final team of eight girls swam hard and fast. It was especially impressive to see the performances of Georgina Whitehouse 4M and Eleanor Sharples 5M in this race, who swam butterfly and did well to keep the Mitre just ahead. At the end of the race there were just two strokes in it as Mitre touched the wall second to the Garden in a very closely fought race.
A great afternoon of competition, and many congratulations to Garden who provided us with excellent competition.
Final scores:
Garden – 21 points
Mitre – 17 points
Field – 11 points
Abbey – 9 points
