In our first game we came up against School House, the Junior House Cricket favourites, we won the toss and elected to bowl; in their 32 overs they scored 120 with some great bowling from Hibell, Congiu and Pywell. We then set about getting this below-par total, but School House started well, removing Pywell for a golden duck, but the team managed to win comfortably, losing just 4 wickets, a good win, giving us a lot of confidence.
We then set about beating Latham; we again won the toss and elected to bat where we made a massive total of 232, special mentions going to Congiu who made 62, and Danny Buckland with his cheeky attempt at a reverse sweep towards the end! We then bowled them out for 60 with Steve Kosmala getting the final wicket with his first delivery, which was carnage! This took us to the final, which we were very excited to be in!
The final was against New House and we went into it with a lot of confidence, we again won the toss – third time lucky – and elected to bowl, with a fabulous display of seam bowling from Hibell and Congiu ripping through the New House batting line as we kept them to 42 all out, with a sly move from Boulton for the final wicket with an absolutely brilliant catch! Then Waters and Hibell saw us home by getting the runs and winning the game by 9 wickets! Well played gang – a superb showing and some splendid cricket played by all! The Junior House Cricket campaign had all the hallmarks of cricket at its best: drama, ambition and passion, and the Orchard house spirit came through in the end. I truly believe we epitomized the words of Leo Watton “in the Orchard of opportunity don’t let the apple fall” and a special mention goes to James Cottam, who made for a brilliant water boy, what would we do without him?
