Junior Gurney Society - Forensics

Thursday evening sees the second instalment of the Gurney Society, this time giving B, A and O Block pupils the opportunity to see how their scientific studies can be translated into exciting, practical uses outside of the classroom.

New this term, the Society offers an informal and enjoyable environment for all Reptonians to broaden their ideas about science and be exposed to research methods, ideas and processes across all three scientific disciplines.

The Society is named after John Henry Gurney, the first Head of Chemistry at Repton. Joining Repton in 1873, he was well ahead of his time - fond of explosions, bad smells and occasionally setting his beard on fire, he was a truly inspirational and forward-thinking teacher, and the Gurney Society will help ensure these qualities endure here at Repton.

Thursday’s meeting, led by Mrs Val Cosford, will delve into the science behind forensics, in particular looking at the key markers in finger print recognition. In taking prints, and also lifting them from various surfaces, pupils will get a fantastic insight into the way science is put to use in vital investigations, and gain an appreciation of the importance of science in such situations.
