Director of Music John Bowley conducted the opening concert of the St Wenceslas Festival, in Prague last month. Working with Harmonia Delectabilis, one of the leading professional period Czech orchestras, and Chamber Choir Vocálni Collegium, Mr Bowley chose to conduct a programme of Handel and Purcell entitled ‘Music for the Kings of England’.
The combination of Handel’s Coronation anthems and Purcell’s Funeral music and psalm settings, in the church U Salvátora, started the festival on a high note. Mr Bowley commented that he felt honoured to open such an established festival with some of his favourite music, and with such fine players and singers.
