Professor Neil Champness, Chair of Chemical Nanoscience at The University of Nottingham visited the school on the evening of Thursday 3rd March to talk to sixth form chemistry students about current research and potential future developments in the fast growing area of nanotechnology.
He kept the audience of sixth formers enthralled for an hour and a half as he described the exciting possibilities which the technology of the very small might bring. From the mundane – self cleaning bathrooms, to the life saving – a potential cancer cure and the real possibility of repairing nerve cells, to the mind boggling – carrying around the sum total of all human knowledge on a mobile phone. Afterwards there was a lively question and answer session, which much of the questioning focussing on the scientifically preposterous ‘grey goo’ theory expounded by Prince Charles.

Many thanks to Professor Champness for giving freely of his time to entertain, enthral and educate some of our sixth form chemists. Pupils left filled with enthusiasm about the possibilities of this technology for the future.
