Careers & Higher Education - Beyond the Arch

Looking to the future

Helping pupils to make informed choices about their future beyond The Arch is an important aspect of a Reptonian’s education. The role of the Careers team is to provide an inspiring framework in which pupils can develop a good understanding of themselves and plan a career path to suit their individual strengths and interests.

A profiling service, career presentation sessions, a careers section on the school’s website, as well as many career relevant societies, are available to all pupils, helping them to access a wide variety of information and advice about future options. Although most Upper Sixth pupils choose to go on to university, there are also a wide range of options available for pupils who would prefer to go into a post-school programme, be it into an apprenticeship, a vocational or military environment. Whichever path they choose, all pupils will have to address the ever-changing trends in national and global employment since competition for work experience, internships and jobs is greater than ever before.

A programme of higher education guidance is provided for all Sixth Form pupils. Talks are given on a range of subjects including choice of course, choice of university, student finance, the employability of graduates, applications to overseas universities, applications for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, and Oxbridge applications. All pupils are introduced to a range of online resources to explore their degree course options and are advised on how to write a persuasive personal statement and a strong UCAS application. Interview practice is provided for applicants to Oxford and Cambridge, and for those applying for medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine.

The latest editions of several reference books are available in Houses. These days, however, pupils more often choose to access the vast range of electronic resources available on the internet. Personal tutors, House parents, subject teachers and the members of the Higher Education and Careers Department are able to guide and advise pupils as they move through the School. A copy of the current Careers Handbook together with the School’s Higher Education Guide, containing a wealth of information and useful web links, can be found on this website. Cambridge Occupational Analysts’ Career Guidance programme is provided for all O Block pupils. As Repton is also a member of ‘Inspiring Futures’, pupils can make use of their ‘Futurewise’ careers experience courses, resources and training, which can provide useful insight and valuable experience.

In the area of Careers Development we are also particularly fortunate to enjoy the support of many parents and Old Reptonians, who provide current pupils with access to stimulating work experience environments and a network of contacts throughout the UK and across the globe. Many parents and ORs also visit the School and provide insight and motivation to pupils with their informative talks and career presentations.
