Glorious Schubertiade

Glorious Schubertiade

On Wednesday evening the Music department held a Schubertiade, to celebrate Schubert’s life and work in this traditional way - by the gathering of friends to sing and play his music. As part of our Subscription Series staff and pupils joined forces and gave a really delightful presentation. Even the audience ended up performing, all singing An die Musik at the end of the concert, and of course Happy Birthday complete with birthday cake.

Interweaved through the performances Nicki Kennedy and John Bowley narrated the story of Schubert’s life. It was not all a serious affair, with Mr Fairbrother’s arrangement of An Sylia in a Bossa Nova style, and a group of drinking songs balancing the programme. The core of the programme was his great quintet in C, with our more senior pupils playing, with staff. Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau’s performance of Der Erlkönig was projected onto a screen, as was Dudley Moore’s Die Flabbergast!

It was a wonderfully warm, engaging evening; one to treasure.
