Report: After a relative last-minute decision to enter this tournament, the victory was as pleasing as it was surprising. Despite the coach company cancelling our mini-bus with five minutes notice we managed to arrive in good time and started the tournament well. Lowri McIntosh and Megan Byas, clearly benefitting from their 1st XI exposure this season, were in control of the play from the first whistle and throughout the tournament. Meg scored 11 of her 13 goals from short corners too.
Esther Gray scored the most important goal of the day in the final, Georgie Whitehouse was a revelation in the forward line making it very difficult for the opposition to play balls past her and Pip Sanders did well given that she was carrying an injury. Grace Sanderson was calm and composed in the centre and Emily Renshaw was deadly from two metres out. Rennie also scored a superb effort after racing from the half way-line on one occasion.
The best performance of the day though, in my opinion was from Sammy Evans. Sammy made numerous close range instinctive saves and was good at defending penalty corners. Her performance in the final was the difference between the two sides as there were a few nervy moments.
The National Finals are to be held at Cox Moors Wood, Birmingham on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th January. Well done to all involved and thanks to all of the supporters.
