Geography in B Block

In B Block (Year 9) all pupils have two lessons of Geography per week. The B Block curriculum is designed to stimulate interest and curiosity. Topics vary from year to year to reflect the events happening at both local and global scales. Topics studied currently in B Block include:

  • Geography in the News
  • Natural Hazards
  • Weather and Climate
  • Glaciation
  • Geographies of Health and Disease
  • Geography of the Olympics

Geographical skills such as OS map, photo and satellite image interpretation, use of coordinates and graph work are integrated into topics throughout the year. Our programme of study is also designed to include tasks that allow pupils to learn both as individuals and in pairs or groups, whilst class work and prep tasks vary from written activities to oral discussions/presentations and research challenges. Regular use is made of the Information Technology Centre.

All B Block undertake a fieldwork exercise in either October or May. This is currently held at the Conkers site within the National Forest. Pupils undertake a range of fieldwork tasks including sustainable forestry, a microclimate study and an orienteering challenge. There are also other activities organised for the B Block throughout the year such as the B Block Quiz.
