Emma wins “Repton’s Young Musician of the Year”!

Tonight saw the annual music competition finals take place. This is an event in which the winners of each of the individual music competitions held throughout the year are given the opportunity to compete for the title of “Repton’s Young Musician of the Year”.

In the junior section of the competition Charlotte Graham 5M was representing the House. She had won the classical section of the girls’ classical song. This evening she sang a wonderful rendition of “Ombra Mai Fu” by Handel. She performed with real poise and the adjudicator, Ryan Hepburn, commented on her obvious enjoyment of the song as well as the power and sincerity of her performance. He awarded Charlotte second place in the competition, with a highly commended position. This is a wonderful achievement in such as strong field of competitors.

The senior competition was very spirited, with a huge range of instruments and exceptional musical talent being representing across the L6th and U6th. Emma Stoll L6M gave a wonderful piano performance of “Sonata in C minor, Op. 10, No. 1, 3rd Mvt., Prestissimo”, by Beethoven and the adjudicator spoke warmly of the way she captured the intention of Beethoven in her playing. She had the audience mesmerized as she performed the piece from memory and it was wonderful to see her poise throughout the course of her performance. Eva Lo U6M also performed very well on the trumpet with her rendition of “Polka” by Vizzutti. This piece demonstrated Eva’s skill at producing a lovely tone on the instrument and also her ability in the upper register.

Emma Monteiro U6M was in the final for two pieces – having won the girls’ classical and popular song sections of the earlier competitions. Her performances this evening were both superb and it was lovely to hear the adjudicator speak of her posture and of the well developed tone in her singing. Emma performed her rendition of the popular song – “Typically English” by Newley beautifully with lots of well choreographed movement to keep the attention of the audience. The adjudicator was so moved by her performance that she was awarded the cup for “Repton’s Young Musician of the Year”. This is a superb achievement and a well deserved accolade for Emma as she moves into her last term at Repton, having made a huge contribution to music at Repton over the course of the last two years since she joined us in the L6th.

Well done indeed to all the musicians from across the Houses. It was a wonderful evening, which showcased the enormous talent of the Repton’s musicians and it is both a mark of their hard work and preparation, as well as that of the music staff who have helped them learn and perfect their performances.
