Pupils at Repton benefit from a fully equipped 330-seat auditorium, The 400 Hall, and a state-of-the-art, ‘black box’ Studio Theatre. There are strong lighting and sound departments with a number of experts available for advice. Exciting times lie ahead for the theatres as plans are underway for a major reconstruction of The 400 Hall's auditorium and reception facilities.
Those keen on Drama can audition for the Cabaret in January - a major production which raises thousands for charity - and for the large cast of the Junior School Play in May. November’s flagship School Play is open to all years. Recent productions include: Revizor (The Government Inspector), Twelfth Night in-the-round and, in 2008, an ambitious production of Tom Stoppard’s On the Razzle.
Quite apart from the regular practical work undertaken by the A Level and GCSE Drama students, the Studio Theatre, which seats 150, has been a popular venue for smaller productions such as the recent Up ‘n’ Under, Of Mice and Men, Berkoff’s Metamorphosis, the Classics Department’s stunning production of Seneca’s Oedipus and the Literary Society’s production of two of Chekhov’s short plays.
The department hosts annual Duologue Competitions for both Seniors and Juniors, Socials, Rock Concerts, and small groups of students can put on their own revues and shows. With its non-stop activity, Drama at Repton offers a huge range of opportunities for all.
