Repton School

Distinguished ORs

Thousands of young men and women have passed through Repton’s Arch and out into their lives as adults. The character of the School, with its mission to encourage the talents of its pupils wherever they may lie, is reflected in the truly diverse fields in which Old Reptonians have gone on to pursue careers and gain life experience.

From science to the arts, philosophy to diplomacy, sport to exploration, music, law, and the world of business – if you can name a career or pick a location on a map there is sure to be a Reptonian who has been there or done that!

In the arts some famous names stand out: novelists Christopher Isherwood and Roald Dahl, poet James Fenton, journalist Jeremy Clarkson, polymath and Rector of the Royal College of Art Christopher Frayling, and actors Basil Rathbone and Graeme Garden. And the tradition continues with rising stars in Nick Burns, Tom Chambers and the singer Beulah.

The contributions of Reptonians in the sporting arena is equally impressive: from the career of Harold Abrahams featured in the film Chariots of Fire, to tennis champion and Wimbledon finalist ‘Bunny Austin’, a host of Test and County cricketers including Richard Hutton, Donald Carr and Chris Adams, in soccer amongst others Harry Cursham who still holds the record for goals scored in the FA Cup, and more recently hockey internationals Ben Sharp and Martin Jones.

In the 20th century Repton produced no fewer than three Archbishops of Canterbury in Ramsey, Fisher and Temple – two of whom had previously served as Headmaster of Repton.

This tradition continues to inspire current Reptonians whichever path they choose to follow. Linked to this page are further details on a selection of some of our Old Reptonians.
