Cupcakes and Haikus

Cupcakes and Haikus

‘National Cupcake Week’ gave Junior Literary Society the perfect opportunity to explore the Japanese poetic form of the Haiku. A way of finding meaning and beauty in the ordinary and the everyday, the highly structured form of the Haiku (employing only 17 syllables) challenges the writer to consider their word choices with care and to find a perspective that is unusual or unique.

Tuesday night saw pupils decorating their home-made cupcakes, with many pupils discovering a hitherto untapped talent in this field! Reptonians from B to O-Block then focused carefully on the experience of consuming their cupcake, inspiring the formulation of their very own Haiku. True to form, the pupils showed considerable creative ingenuity, with poems written from the point of view of a pink sprinkle, whose sad demise was apparently akin to murder. The winning entry, however, (as chosen by the Sixth Form Secretaries) focused on the tragic incineration of their cupcake in a microwave:

They pushed the button

Tragically scorched was I

Never again – BIN!

It is a real pleasure to see so many Juniors leave the comfort of their Common Room to explore their creative talents. The second half of term sees meetings including a celebration of Bonfire Night in conjunction with the Music Department, the annual Hallowe’en Ghost Walk and a Christmas themed Special.
