Match Report:

On Saturday 12th June, nineteen members of the school athletics squad represented South Derbyshire in the 2010 County Athletics Championships. As expected, there were some fantastic performances on the day and ten pupils managed to secure a medal:

Gold Medal: Sam Armstrong (Senior 400m), Niel Twidle (Senior Triple Jump), Amelia Etherington (Senior 200m), Hannah Barker (Senior Triple Jump) and Grace Sanderson (Intermediate 300m).

Silver Medal: Christian Priestley (Intermediate 400m), Jordan King (Intermediate 800m), Hannah Forsyth (Intermediate 200m) and Milly Louch (Intermediate Triple Jump).

Bronze Medal: Cameron Winfield (Intermediate 200m)

Whilst all of our athletes competed strongly in their events there are a number of particularly notable performances to highlight. Grace Sanderson, who came first in the girls intermediate 300 metres, managed to further improve on her school record that she set earlier in the term. In addition, Christian Priestley and Jordan King, who were running in two of the most competitive events, narrowly missed out on breaking school records that have stood for more than 30 years. Christian came second in the boys intermediate 400 metres with a time of 53.7 seconds, whilst Jordan King, who came second in the boys intermediate 800 metres, with a time of 2.05 minutes.

The boys and girls teams have experienced rather mixed results in school fixtures this term and it would be easy to ignore the fact that there are some extremely capable athletes in the school at the moment. These individuals have excelled week-in week-out against rivals from competitor schools and it is fitting that they can now count themselves amongst the best in Derbyshire too. Well done!           THN/LHB
