Repton School

Classics

Repton has a strong tradition in Classics, which continues to thrive here. Pupils joining Repton in B Block study either Latin or Classical Civilisation, and both subjects are available as GCSE options, along with Classical Greek. All three subjects are taught in the Sixth Form, and several students each year go on to read Classical subjects at university, both at Oxbridge and elsewhere. There are four full-time Classicists in the Department.

Outside the classroom the Department is involved in a range of activities:

School visits, both in Britain and abroad, provide pupils with excellent opportunities to bring the ancient world to light by seeing it at first hand. These have included recent trips to Italy, Greece and Turkey. Classical plays, both in the original language and in translation, help to make Greek and Roman drama accessible in the modern world. Recent productions have included a highly acclaimed performance of Seneca’s Oedipus Rex in the original Latin and adaptations of stories from Greek mythology.

The Classical Society meets regularly and is well supported by committed Classicists in the School. The programme includes talks by distinguished visiting speakers as well as activities led by our own pupils and staff.

Classical Reading Competitions give our classical linguists the chance to present Latin and Greek live in performance and Repton has enjoyed considerable success in the annual Classical Association Reading Competition in London.
