Choral & Chapel Music

Repton has a long history of nurturing excellent choral music, and today there is certainly much enthusiasm surrounding many of the singing events which occur throughout the school year.

Chapel Choir

The Chapel Choir is one of the School’s flagship groups, featuring 80 singers from all school years. Performing most Sunday mornings for School Chapel services, as well as special occasions including memorial services, Christmas Carol Services, Founders Day, Remembrance Sunday and Speech Day, the Choir gets through an enormous amount of music with repertoire spanning from early plainsong to music especially written by contemporary composers.

In addition to the regular round of School services, the Chapel Choir also regularly performs in Cathedrals. Most recently this has included Lincoln Cathedral, Worcester Cathedral and York Minster. New compositions are often written for the choir by leading composers including Bob Chilcott (‘Dear Lord and Father of Mankind’) and Alexander L’Estrange (‘Tune me O Lord’). The Chapel Choir has also released CDs, including most recently a recording of Christmas music.

Parents current and prospective are most welcome to attend Sunday morning services.

Chamber Choir

The Chamber Choir comprises around forty of the more experienced singers in the School, focussing on a mix of both sacred and secular music, new and old.

In 2016 the group performed live on the BBC Radio 4’s ‘Daily Service’ Programme from Didsbury, Manchester, and performed Choral Evensong in King’s College, Cambridge.

Closer to home, the group regularly performs at outreach events as well as services including Matins, Compline and Mass in the School Chapel. One regular highlight is the annual performance of Allegri’s ‘Miserere’ on Ash Wednesday.

In January 2017, the girls of the Chamber Choir performed Britten’s sublime and complex ‘Ceremony of Carols’ in a Coffee Concert which also saw the launch of the new school harp.

Reptiles is the school's elite close harmony group who perform at various events throughout the year. With a focus on secular music, often including arrangements of popular music, rehearsals are led by the School’s Head of Singing who encourages a high level of performance and advises on issues of balance, blend and listening. In 2017 the group enjoyed a masterclass with Ben Parry, Director of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain.

School-wide singing competitions

One of the highlights of the entire school year is the annual Unison and Harmony competitions. Keenly contested, everyone in the School participates and performs to a professional adjudicator.
