Match Report:
On a pitch that looked made for batting, it was surprising to see sixteen wickets fall for 245 runs in this exciting 60-over game. Goodacre went early to a smart low catch of a nothing ball and Hibell was run out by a country mile to leave the home side reeling at 12-2 after three overs. Re-building was the order of the day for Cartlidge and Frost, which was not always easy against a good pair of Worksop spinners whose combined analyses was 12-1-34-2. They were the spinners' scalps, whereupon Cotter stayed picking up mainly singles against good bowling and tight fielding. At the end of the 27th over Repton were 93-5, but fortunately 32 runs were hit off the final three overs to post our total at the tea-break.
The home total looked woefully low on the resumption as Faisal, the Worksop captain, took toll of the Repton bowlers and raced to 35 and the total to 47-1 in the eighth over (the one wicket to fall being a run-out with good work by Binns). However, Faisal smashed the ball back to Cotter for a reflex caught and bowled dismissal. This changed the complexion of the match and when Frost ran out the opposition's number three with the score on 56, the game seemed to have swung in Repton's favour, but Worksop still had plenty of overs (18) in which to score the necessary 70 runs for victory. The next two batsmen batted sensibly and put on a partnership of 41 - the highest of the match for either side. However, after bowling two wides, Hibell claimed two wickets in three balls, both bowled with absolute trimmers. This irrevocably changed the course of the match as he had dismissed both of the set batsmen. The result though was not a foregone conclusion as the Repton bowlers were having a dire afternoon with no-balls (17 of them) and extras were second top score with 32. The total stood at 105-5 at the start of the 21st over when Buckley, with his new orthodox style, started his spell. He gave the ball flight and the opposition batsmen obliged by hitting the ball in the air or across the line. He finished off the Worksop innings with his third caught and bowled to much delight of the other fielders and the home support.
A nail-biting climax to a closely-fought game.
