Match Report:
With the exception of a five-over spell when the batting lost its way and a five-over spell when the home side allowed the opposition put on 20 runs for the ninth wicket, this was by far and away the best overall performance of the season. There was the sense of urgency in the running between the wickets instigated by Goodacre and by Cotter later on in his innings. There was the clean hitting of Taft at the close of the innings, which meant that the total discussed before the match started, was achieved with a 'bit of jam on top' (Mr Afford's expression).
When Repton bowled, Hibell (4-2-3-0) and Frost (5-0-11-2) kept it tight such that Notts HS were 16 for 2 off 10 overs. Bell, after being slogged for a four, held one back and bowled their number four. A slight rally by the opposition before Buckley held onto a good caught and bowled, and then Cotter claimed two wickets in an over to leave the batting side in the mire at 48 for 6. Things went from bad to worse when two more wickets fell on 49, one each to Buckley and Cotter, before the slight dip in performance allowed the opposition to reach 69 for 8. Binns, making amends for a missed run-out chance, ran out their number ten and Cotter claimed the last wicket off the first ball of the next over. Of the ten opposition wickets to fall, eight were bowled – reinforcing that truism "if you miss, I hit".
The home team must try to match the level of intensity shown in this match in the remaining games of the season, not least in the Lord's Taverners' Derbyshire Final on Thursday. A good performance: well done.
