Boys' U14A v Dean Close

Date: Saturday 13th 2010

Venue: Away, depart 12.50pm, starts 3.30pm

Match Report: A fixture away at Dean Close is always going to be tricky enough, without losing two of the more influential players in the team. Aaran Hibell and Robbie Astin were both too unwell to travel and this resulted in an inevitable re-shuffle of players. James Shires played well in his first game in the middle of the pitch and Jason Taft adapted well to centre forward, but moving these players meant we were less of a threat on the right hand side which has been a productive area for us lately. The aim yesterday was not necessarily to win the game but to continue to learn and try to make further progress ready for the Midlands finals on Friday. In the first half the boys did try their best to continue to play as we have all season but, because of a couple of injuries, for a large proportion of the half we were down to only ten players. However, the less said about the second half, the better as we played with little width, failed to defend properly as a team and not once did we pass the ball backwards or switch play from one side of the pitch to the other. In a 5 - 0 defeat a coach learns far more about the technical ability and mental toughness of individual players than he does in a comfortable win.    SJC
